The Look Of Rock

Do rock music stars have a certain look? Can you tell a rock star from a mile away? Is there a certain look that says “rock star”? Does the way they dress, or wear their hair say that they are rock stars? Well, yes and no. That certain “out there” look could also be saying, “If you find me in this condition, call the local loony bin, I have escaped.” It could also be saying, “I don’t care what you think”, or “Have I shocked you enough?” Maybe the look is just saying, “I am my own person and this is how I am feeling right now.”

Just thirty some odd years ago it was a lot easier to tell what kind of musician you were seeing. Punk rock musicians sported the colored hair, teased out to there, spiked to look like a planet had landed on their heads. Their clothing was black, and full of spiked things. Collars, as in dog collars, were popular and their music was loud and banging. Maybe they were the precursor to the “look whatever way you want to” look. They took the heat so that the rock and rollers of today were free to wear whatever they wanted, even if that means a swan dress to an awards show.

In our current society, four young men do not have to wear suits to perform with the only freedom they have being their mop top haircuts. Musicians are free to express themselves, not only through their immensely talented music ability, but through the way they dress, the way they wear their hair, the accessories they choose to adorn themselves with. These are bold fashion statements, they do make us look, they make us take notice. The look may even get an unknown noticed through a picture in a magazine. I guess you could say they are still saying, “I am my own person.” Good for them.
